GIOACHINO ROSSINI – OVERTURE TO THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) is Rossini’s most famous comic opera, based on the play of the same name by the great French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais.

The story revolves around Count Almaviva, the young Rosina, and the clever barber Figaro.

Deeply in love with Rosina, Count Almaviva seeks Figaro’s help in winning her affection. Rosina, however, lives under the strict guardianship of Dr. Bartolo, a cunning older man who intends to marry her himself in order to gain control of her inheritance. To get close to Rosina, Almaviva adopts a series of disguises, appearing first as a drunken soldier and later as a music teacher.

In the end, Almaviva’s true identity is revealed. Rosina discovers that the man she loves is not a poor young student but a wealthy count. More importantly, she recognizes the sincerity of his feelings. The opera concludes in joyful celebration as the two lovers marry just in time before Bartolo can thwart their plans.

Interestingly, the opera’s overture does not recount the plot itself. Instead, it perfectly captures the spirit of the work: lively, witty, unpredictable, and full of energy. Rossini’s famous crescendos create the impression of characters rushing about, hatching schemes, and generating one comic situation after another on stage. For this reason, the Overture to The Barber of Seville is frequently performed as an independent concert piece.

ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK: FROM THE NEW WORLD - SYMPHONY NO. 9

In the history of symphonic performance, there was one work that caused an entire concert hall to erupt in thunderous applause after every movement — not only after the first movement or at the conclusion of the piece — and led the composer himself to rise and bow repeatedly in gratitude to the audience. That composer was Antonín Dvořák, at the premiere of his Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” on December 16, 1893, in New York.
